I believe that landscape architecture must evolve away from delivering purely aesthetic value and towards solving real-world problems. In particular, we must address climate change by helping to mitigate its negative effects and by using natural resources in a sustainable way. We have to strive for a design compatible with environment and topology, while still creating places of beauty.
Advanced modeling techniques and point cloud representations allow us to show not only beautiful pictures but ground our work in reality. They enable us to create large-scale solutions and strategies to mitigate the impact of climate change in diverse and ever-shifting landscape typologies. Collaboration with experts from different fields will more and more become an essential part of our profession. But at the same time, we should seek to introduce our own expertise and perspective earlier in the design and development process.
