The Foundation Studio I will be dealing with the urban territory of Basel in autumn semester 2021. The complexity of the region with its rich variety of geology and vegetation, the political borders and an urge for urban renewal will be the background for the development of the design projects.
After an introduction to Basel and its territory during the previous modules, working in different scales on concrete tasks, the students will now work independently in the synthesis module to identify a relevant landscape architectural issue which they will develop in a design project.
The track fields of the former transshipment station and the river basin of the Wiese are two linear large-scale inner-city landscapes that are now up for debate. Today they form striking breaks in the dense urban fabric and are to be rethought as parts of the network of open spaces in Basel. An analysis of the site will determine the program and the concrete location of the intervention, and thus form the basis for the development of the project.
